Gazing upon the sea’s treasure

Wading through the waves,
Near sea shores and caves,
Collecting many a sublime secrets,
Swept from the depths,
Cloaked in shifting shadows,
And carried to the shallows,
Drenched in ambient light,
Making them easy to sight,
Shells, glass, sand and stones,
Curves, edges, angles and cones,
In varied shades, shapes and ages;
Maybe some belonged to mages,
Or long forgotten seafaring sages,
Conjuring up vivid images
Of obscure elusive mysteries,
Promises, warnings or memories,
Raging storms and relentless rains,
Pirates and their ill-gotten gains,
Some majestic being’s charmed remains,
Serpentine weeds and dormant seeds,
Keepers of timeless deeds,
And moments of greed overtaking needs,
Old discarded divining scales,
Carrying within petrified tales
Of tragic, twisted fates
Of monsters and their slayers
Friends, foes, rivals and strangers,
Man-made and natural disasters,
Villains, heroes and soothsayers,
Angry gods and their dreadful tests,
Ancient mariners’ mystical quests,
Ruined ships and sunken chests,
Veiled history in liquid darkness rests…
Perhaps hiding deep lies a slumbering creature,
Antithesis to human nature,
Knowing, sensing every cheer and every fear,
And waiting…waiting to rise and devour!
Such is the strange evocative power
Of gazing upon the sea’s treasure
